Teenage Stereotypes

(This is an ongoing research post that I will update with more information)

As part of the research for two of my briefs, I'm going to explore teenage stereotyping and the labels people associate with this in the age bracket of 13-18.Throughout the history of film, television and 20th century literature, a set of stereotypes regarding the personalities of teenagers have been established. These stereotypes are usually either over played or form the sole basis of the character. This is not to say all characters are based on labels but it's found to be common amongst shows/books aimed at teenagers and pre teens.

Current Examples:
Female -
  • The girl next door: "The girl next door is used to indicate what is seen as average and wholesome femininity. She is neither butch nor high-maintenance and not promiscuous." -Gwen Stacy, Spider Man. Jane Bennet, Pride and Prejudice.
