Crit Feedback Reflection

A problem I need to address from my crit is the apparent lack of context of my Stereotypes brief (and to some extent the Harry Potter brief.)

STEREOTYPES:
It was felt that the illustration were good, as well as the booklet idea, but that there was no real context for them. This is completely my own fault for only having the brief in note form, as well as not stating that the brief itself was a study of character and a research brief into stereotypes themselves.

"What are they for?" Was a question that popped up and that there could be "Loads of context", which is something I need to address and quickly.

HARRY POTTER:
Not so much not having a context, but a lack of stating what the point of the project it. Again, my fault that I didn't have the brief available but I will rectify this.

Questions For Crit

STEREOTYPES BRIEF:
- Are the backgrounds on the characters themselves distracting? Do they take away from the initial image and if so what do you suggest? Either I make the background plain white or fade the patterns out, or are they fine as they are?

- So I printed out the insults pages and realised the text was far too big. (Or at least to me it is.) As these are going to be prints, is the type at a correct size for viewing on a wall, or should it be smaller?

- There will be 10 DPS for booklets in varying colours so the inside of the book will have a rainbow motif. Do I make the outside black and white and unstylised (To show the point of not judging a book by it’s cover) or should I use the pre existing illustrations?

- I’m really stuck on how else to expand this without the obvious range which would be posters, greeting cards ect. Any suggestions?

HARRY POTTER BRIEF:

- Book cover designs. I want them to be mimilistic, but not to the point of not knowing what the covers are supped to be. I’m not sure about the placement of the characters or what to do with the back.

- I also don’t know if the type is working on the covers or whether they are starting to resemble my Marvel Books from last module.

- The book cover designs and the prints should tie together. Will the watercolour paper and use of one colour achieve this effect or are the house banners/marauders map starting to look separate?

- Ideally, I want the feel of the project to be that of ink on parchment, is that working or is it not obvious enough?

- I’ll have drawn 30-35 (27 so far) characters by the end of the weekend. I’m thinking of making a booklet with a brief description of each character to be included with the box of books. Good idea or could I do something else with them?

Brief 8: Mid Way Point

I've come to realise over the course of the day (and whilst working on one of the more illustrative pieces) that I can't screen print all of the posters. It's going to eat too much into the time allotted for this brief.

So my solution is to screen print 5 of the posters which will include all four houses and the marauders quote. One colour plus stock to give it that tactile feel. They'll work as a set with their limited colour and similar feel.

The more illustrative pieces have a differnt feel to them. They tap into the whimsical side of the series and though they're still going to be limited colour I would prefer to make them digitally printed. (I am looking to print on the same stock as the other five so they still tie together yet can be seen as a different set.)

We'll see how this goes. ~

One to One Tutorial

My one to tutorial yesterday with Fred went well and now I know exactly what I need to do in order achieve a good body of work for my portfolio. Knowing that my last module work could have been 1st material is the kind of push I need right now. I was disappointed with my over all grade, especially after receiving a 1st for the last project before summer. If I can apply what I did in that module to this one then I will be heading in the right direction.

I need to remember that I am not a script writer and that I should not be trying to create stories for my character designs but basing them around questions. This is what worked in the 2nd year because I was asking questions about langauge and dialect and forming characters around my findings.

So, I need to re work some of my briefs, re write my SOI.

Last Module Feedback // Grade

Design Practice 3: OUGD 301 feedback.

"The level of practical and visual experimentation is good but inconsistent resulting in a body of work that lacks clear focus and direction. A more critically aware approach to the development of initial ideas would help you to exploit the potential in your work more consistently."

If I'm being perfectly honest, I was expecting a worse grade. I struggled to get myself of the ground for the fist module of this year and this has impacted my grade significantly. My inability to time keep and keep a record of this also contributed to the grade.

"A more organised approach to your studies would allow you to develop a more effective studio practice."

By definition I'm not a very organised person. I kept up the blogging and posting something everyday, even if it was just a small reflection but I clearly need to step this up. I need to be making action plans, (something I struggle immensely with) and my briefs need to reflect my design practice more because something clearly went wrong in the process for last module.

I liked the briefs for their character design aspect, I didn't like them for the applying to a range ect. There was so much more I could do, yet I didn't do this and the only thing I can blame is my poor time keeping abilitys, despite being in the study 5 days a week 9-6. This is something Lorenzo brought up today during group progress surgeries. I'm not a brief writer.

Despite being disappointed in myself I now know what I've got to do to make FMP work for me so my portfolio will reflect my design practice and my grade will reflect my efforts.

Progress Surgeries Feed Back

The progress surgeries with Lorenzo with Lorenzo went well this morning. It was pointed out to me that I'm not actually very good at brief writing (which is true.) That I focus on too much trying to apply my designs to ranges ect that I lose sight of what it is that I'm about; which is the characters.

Another thing pointed out to me is that I should focus in more on the character and how they are perceived rather than writing an entire story and background to fit the characters. This is a trap that I hope I'll not fall into but I know there is a danger of it happening. I'm glad it was pointed out to me so I can try and avoid it.
